Nikola Tesla's AC motors at Niagra Falls
|
Nikola Tesla's biggest and most famous achievement was alternating current. AC is one of the main reasons he is such a significant inventor today. Tesla worked hard on alternating current. He repeatedly kept trying to win the battle of the currents against Thomas Edison. Edison claimed that Tesla's AC system was dangerous and to use his DC system because it was much safer. He demonstrated this by electrocuting animals in public with Tesla's AC system. Edison even claimed that within a 6 month time period the customer using Tesla's AC system would be dead. Nikola Tesla proved Thomas Edison wrong at the Worlds Colombian Exposition. Winning the Battle of the currents wasn't easy. This proves Tesla worked hard and believed in his idea. Tesla wanted everyone to have to use his system. He sold the patent to George Westinghouse so that he could distribute it around the world. Tesla earned $60,000 ( 1.4 million in today's dollars), 150 shares of stock and a $2.50 royalty from that deal. He was also offered to work for Westinghouse's company for $2,000 a month ($48,000 in today's dollars). All this shows Nikola Tesla's AC system was a huge deal. This one invention led Tesla to fame.
